Greater Boston Census - Winter 2006-2007

homeless bostonEach year the Mayor's office completes a census report on the state of homelessness in the city of Boston.

Statistical Snapshot of Homelessness in Boston

Population:  On the night of the census there were 7,681 men, women and children, an increase of 11% from last year.

Families:  The total number of homeless men, women, and children in family emergency shelter was 3,870, an increase of 22% from last year.   

Homeless Individuals: The number of homeless men and women without families was 3811, 3% higher than the previous year.  

Fastest Growing Subpopulation - Families: The number of households in family shelter, domestic violence or transitional programs was 872, compared with 746 households the prior year.

    Annual Estimate
    A study by the Urban Institute estimates that approximately 3.5 million people are likely to experience homelessness in a given year.

     

    Census
    On the night of the Boston census 6,365 homeless men, women and children were counted.
