If you have filled out a volunteer application, feel free to check our volunteer calendar for available volunteer dates and shifts in our kitchen at 39 Kingston Street.
We do ask that individuals be 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by a parent or an adult supervisor.
FRONT DESK ATTENDANT
Front desk volunteers track residents as they pass in and out of the building, answer phone calls, page clients and staff, and distribute materials to visitors seeking information. Training will be provided, but prior experience with homeless populations is a plus. We're looking for a commitment of at least one 3-6 hour shift per week between 8am-5pm daily.
WEEKDAYS MEAL PROGRAMS/KITCHEN SERVICES:
The Boston Rescue Mission provides three meals a day for our Residential Recovery guests, two meals for overnight shelter guests, and one daily afternoon meal open to the public. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and set-up for meals, serve, and assist in the clean-up process. Participating in meal programs is one of the most popular volunteer opportunities.
Here is the kitchen shift schedule on a typical weekday:
Every Saturday morning, volunteers help prepare and pack meals in the kitchen which they later help distribute to the homeless at the Boston Common. Volunteers may also accept prayer requests and interact with the population. Volunteers also help to clean up and return outreach materials. Following Outreach, either the same outreach group or another batch of volunteers helps out in the kitchen.
9:00am-12pm (kitchen shift)
SUNDAY COMMUNITY MEAL
Sunday Community Meal is one of our most popular volunteer opportunities as it allows a group of 5-6 volunteers to take on full responsibility to arrange the food ingredients and prepare and serve food for about 175 homeless men and women at the Mission. Food can be prepared either at their preferred facility or at the Mission’s kitchen.
(Recommended Food: Sandwiches, Pasta, Spaghetti, Salad, Veggies, Soup, Fruits)

Due to the volume of clients and guests who are served by the Mission each year, the Kingston House requires a great deal of upkeep and repair. Maintenance volunteer duties may include cleaning, painting, repairing, and home improvement. Volunteers particularly talented in specific areas such as electrical, plumbing, and mechanical are eagerly sought. Schedule for this opportunity is need-based.
If you are interested in joining the Boston Rescue Mission family as a volunteer please fill out one of our applications. Feel free to download a more extensive list of guidelines for volunteering in our volunteer handbook.
Our volunteer drivers have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record. We need help driving our cargo vans, picking up food donations from area restaurants, transferring and storing those donations, and other driving tasks as needed. Lifting up to 50 lbs. is a must. Volunteers have strong interpersonal skills, are self-motivated, and graceful in attitude and spirit. Please be professional in appearance and manner, present a model of loyalty and confidentiality, possess maturity, have a good memory and strong detail orientation, and a sense of love and care for the needy.
If you can work with a computer, file and scan documents, enter data, and do other general office duties, we would love your help! A regular commitment of 6-10 hours per week for several months would be ideal.
