WEEKDAY MEAL PROGRAMS/KITCHEN SERVICES:
The Boston Rescue Mission provides three meals a day for our Residential Recovery guests and two meals for overnight shelter guests. Volunteers are needed to help prepare, setup and serve meals, wash dishes and clean-up after meals. Participating in meal programs is one of the most popular volunteer opportunities.
Here is the kitchen shift schedule on a typical weekday:
SHIFT SCHEDULE: 9am - 12pm or 3:30 - 6:30pm
PLEASE NOTE: For some kitchen shifts or large groups, some or all group members may be asked to help with other tasks, including unloading donations, cleaning or deep cleaning, folding laundry, organizing shelves, and other work as well.
SATURDAY OUTREACH & KITCHEN
Every Saturday morning, volunteers help prepare and pack meals in the kitchen which they later help distribute to the homeless at the Boston Common. Volunteers may also accept prayer requests and interact with the population. Volunteers also help to clean up and return outreach materials. Following Outreach, either the same outreach group or another batch of volunteers helps out in the kitchen.
SUNDAY COMMUNITY MEAL
Sunday Community Meal is one of our most popular volunteer opportunities as it allows a group of 5-6 volunteers to take on full responsibility to arrange the food ingredients and prepare and serve food for about 175 homeless men and women at the Mission. Food can be prepared either at their preferred facility or at the Mission’s kitchen.
(Recommended Food: Sandwiches, Pasta, Spaghetti, Salad, Veggies, Soup, Fruits)
Due to the volume of clients and guests who are served by the Mission each year, the Kingston House requires a great deal of upkeep and repair. Maintenance volunteer duties may include deep (sometimes dirty) cleaning, painting, repairing, and home improvement. Volunteers particularly talented in specific areas such as electrical, plumbing, and mechanical are eagerly sought. The schedule for this opportunity is need-based.
If you are interested in joining the Boston Rescue Mission family as a volunteer please fill out one of our applications. Feel free to download a more extensive list of guidelines for volunteering in our volunteer handbook.
Our volunteer drivers have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record. We need help driving our cargo vans, picking up food donations from area restaurants, transferring and storing those donations, and other driving tasks as needed. Lifting up to 50 lbs. is a must. Volunteers have strong interpersonal skills, are self-motivated, and graceful in attitude and spirit. Please be professional in appearance and manner, present a model of loyalty and confidentiality, possess maturity, have a good memory and strong detail orientation, and a sense of love and care for the needy. These shifts are between 4:30-6:30pm weekdays.
SHIFT SCHEDULE: 4:30pm - 6:30pm M-F
We welcome hands to help with housekeeping! One of our main needs is help cleaning the actual beds for our shelter guests. This cleaning shift needs volunteers on weekdays from 1-4pm.
SHIFT SCHEDULE: 1pm - 4pm M-F
Our administrative offices at 25 Kingston St also need cleaning. If you have 2 hours in a week, we would love your help in one 2 hour shift or two 1 hour shifts during the work week. These times are flexible.
Every night our shelter guests use bedding and towels during their stay. Your help in washing, drying and folding is appreciated!
SHIFT SCHEDULE: 8AM - 1PM
